A fruit lover as a child laid the path to a career in the fresh produce industry. The common theme over my 45-year career was the drive to increase the consumption of fresh produce. A natural curiosity, stubborn persistence driven by innovation, resulted in a career spent making a market vs selling in a market. In 1980, led a Stanford Business School case study on the consumer impact of fresh cut produce. 1985, key architect in the formation of Markon, an industry leading produce buying coop established by early adopter broadline foodservice distributors incorporating fresh produce in their offer. 2007, led a Harvard Business School case study on forming an alliance of competitors to execute a branded taste strategy to increase consumption of tree fruit. In 2012, recognized as an “Innovator of the Year” by the National Restaurant Association for increasing consumption of ready to eat, single serve fresh grapes year-round in schools nationally.
Over my career I have been struck by the irony of food loss at the production level, persistent food insecurity and escalating obesity. In 2012, I was asked to join United Way’s campaign to “systemically end” food insecurity in Maricopa County AZ, chaired by Derrick Hall the CEO of the Arizona Diamondbacks. During this time, working with the nation’s first food bank and last mile social needs organizations, Derrick shared with me “that to systemically change anything there must be an economic model.” This proved to be true and has driven my search since then for such an economic model to increase fresh produce consumption of 120 million underserved Americans. A search that has led to the need and opportunity to accelerate the transition to fully accountable value-based care.
